Stargirl News

Post by RogerPyle » Sun Dec 01, 2019 1:03 pm

I didn't know if there was a thread dedicated just for the movie. If It needs to be moved just let me know.

The last part of this was from the main interview that Music and Arts released a few weeks ago. Wonder how much else they held back for moments like this.

Quite a lot, probably. Grace and Co. like to tease us.

Posting this to promote the thread, I figure it might get quite a bit of attention in the next few weeks.

In searching for something else, I came across this blog that came out shortly after the announcement that Grace was cast as Stargirl. It might be posted here already somewhere else, but worth revisiting,

https://thegeekiverse.com/disney-make-j ... irl-movie/

Excerpt:
"Grace VanderWaal of America’s Got Talent fame has been cast in the title role and if there was anyone on this planet born to earn the title of Stargirl, it is Grace VanderWaal. At just 14 years old, she has already built a brand for herself where she is unique and marches to the beat of her own drum. She is quirky and not ashamed of what makes her different. Oh, and she already knows how to play ukelele so there’s that, too…"

If her "bad acting" comes anywhere close to what she showed in Clearly and Waste My Time she should get multiple award nominations for Stargirl. :)

She's pretty self-critical, so I'd think if she thought her performance was embarrassingly bad, she wouldn't have given an all-CAPS recommendation. At least that's how I am; I tend to want to sweep things under the rug that don't live up somehow. I'm pumped for this movie!

Cosmopolitan magazine has come out with it's predictions about the most romantic movies of 2020, and guess what there's a movie called Stargirl on the list. It appears that Stargirl is making the rounds with critics to end up on this list. It would appear that Grace did a damn good job of acting. https://www.cosmopolitan.com/entertainm ... vies-2020/

The trailer for the Disney+ original "Timmy Failure" dropped today, exactly one month before the movie debuts.

A Valentine's Day(ish) trailer drop for "Stargirl" makes a lot of sense... ;)

Wow...that was actually a really great trailer. The movie, like I've always suspected of "Stargirl", also feels in no way like a Disney Channel movie...it's far more artful, intelligent and quirky.

Bring on "Stargirl" if this is an indication of what Disney+ is capable of with these originals (based on novels)!

"The film will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25, 2020. The film will be released on Disney+ on February 7, 2020." -wikipedia

Many ways a departure from traditional Made for TV fare.

Too bad they are not showing Stargirl at Sundance like Timmy Failure. Stargirl would fit right in as a artsy indie film. Do hope that Disney does a limited release for Stargirl in LA area theaters to qualify for Academy Awards Oscar nomination.

Wikipedia is not gospel. It is user generated information, often incorrect information. It may be true, but until verified from another source I wouldn't make plans around that data.

Ahhh! Much better. I have had a healthy distrust of Wikipedia ever since the time that I made alterations to an article and those alterations stuck for months. I made those alterations from a faulty memory of events. They were incorrect. But it was a long time before they were caught by anybody.

I tried three times to update the release date for Stargirl to March 13 on Wiki but the watchdog there won't accept YouTube as a reliable source. The last time I even used the "What's On Disney Plus" as a source but even then he wouldn't accept it because it wasn't a direct Disney announcement.

I see now that it's on there, but it didn't come from me. Evidently Twitter is a more reliable source than YouTube.

My source was personal memory and it wasn't questioned. I suspect some articles get closer scrutiny than others.

Yes, it depends how many eyes are on the page in question. For topics with thousands of visits a day (and where the topic is not too contentious, i.e. stuck in a permanent editorial tug-of-war) the quality is generally pretty high. For more obscure pages, it's a bit of a crapshoot.

Timmy Failure is being shown at Sundance per the official website for Sundance. https://www.sundance.org/2020-sundance- ... l-schedule

I put in the IMDB date change. Got an acceptance notification and everything. I also got them to finally take off that dumb animated picture under the Images section. I've got a contribution in progress to remove the 1/1/2020 date and change the "tv premiere" tag to "internet" to match other Disney+ releases.

Me and IMDB go way back. ;)

I noticed the estimated cost for making Timmy Failure is 45 million. That seems like a lot even though they did have to CGI the polar bear but still. Has anyone seen an estimated cost for Stargirl? I'm sure it's nowhere near the TF budget.

I don't know about NOWHERE near. There are some pretty big names and a bunch of location shooting. Also they're using (therefore licensing) a good deal of classic music. I can easily see it in the 30-35 million range when all's said and done. Nothing is cheap these days.

I was thinking around 20-25m but I forgot about the music licensing and I'm sure Giancarlo Esposito wasn't cheap so it's probably closer to your guess. Disney spent 40m for there original Togo which was a really good movie. It would be interesting to know how much they paid Grace. I have no idea what the normal rate is for a first-time actor in a leading role but if I had to guess 200-300k?

A LOT of wacky coverage of the trailer, but this is one of my favorites. Not long or in-depth or anything, but I SWEAR this was translated from English to Punjabi and back again.

Entry-level info for the previously-unaware-of-Grace set:

Pleasant enough, and they were nice enough to point to her streaming music, which is more than most coverage has done.

They also link to the ScreenRant writeup on the film - one of the best I've seen.
