Let’s kill some art, shall we?

Case in point: the lyrics of “You’ll get bored”
Pretty straightforward, right?

Tonight
You’re taking all my feelings and thoughts
You know how to
Speak English properly
Then I like you, there you go

“I have just met you, I’m fascinated. I want to know all about you.”
I don’t think we’ll have to read “speak English properly” literally, we know that Grace can appreciate “an accent”
To have a decent conversation however: I can see that as a requirement to merit further interest.

I look at you, and tell you that I’m feeling you out
Are you scared, or just getting bored of me now?

“Can you stand my scrutiny? What makes you so distant? You know, your standoffishness makes me really question myself!”

And everybody says there’s such things as second chances
But in life you just take what you get
When I look at you it feels it will be forever
But who knows when we’ll meet again

“I could take it slow, but do I want to? I get really good vibes. This may be our only opportunity. Let’s make the most of it!”

I’ll make you laugh
I make you feel a special way
With only me, with only me
You’ll want to spend your every day
I give my all,
You love my energy

“Can you feel how I try to impress you? You want to see me again, right?”

But no matter what, no matter what
You’ll just get bored of me

“Here we go again, my self-doubts overwhelming me. Maybe playing hard to get would be the more successful strategy? But my heart is on my sleeve; I’m not one to play games.”

I’m mad
‘Cause you speak so easily to everyone.

Aaand the green eyed monster is rearing its ugly head. Am I that invested in you already?”

Please stop
Putting yourself down constantly
And just hear me for once

“Apparently I am. I want to see you in your best light, and exclusivity, just for the night, would feel sooo nice!”

Stop listening to your mama when she gets in your head
Turn up your voice and just talk

“I want to get to the real you, not the you that plays roles that are expected from him. Communicate, please!”

”You listen to my words, but the moment I stop and say more
Then your eyes will be just unlocked

I have your attention, but just when I want to discuss this idea that is really important to me now, your eyes start to wander and I lose the grip on you. And that makes me feel sooooo insecure! Listen to me, dadgummit!”

I’ll make you laugh
I make you feel a special way
With only me, with only me
You’ll want to spend your every day
I give my all,
You love my energy
But no matter what, no matter what
You’ll just get bored of me

“We’re talking, doing the social dance, but can this go anywhere?”

I give my heart, I give my soul
I get attached and then they go
I play my part, I play the role

“Don’t I know it? I want more from such an exchange than I usually get. I’m willing to invest my part, but where’s my ROI?

Maybe I should hide away so that they never know

“This game can be so disheartening. Will it ever be worth my while?”

I’ll make you laugh
I make you feel a special way
With only me, with only me
You’ll want to spend your every day
I give my all,
You love my energy
But no matter what, no matter what
You’ll just get bored of me

So that’s it, right? Just an angsty teenager flexing her flirtatious muscle. (A very eloquent angsty teenager, admittedly.)

Weeeellll….

I’ll make you laugh
I make you feel a special way

I give my all,
You love my energy

These lines had me think of Grace on stage an awful lot. Does the song work on that level as well? Let’s see:

Tonight
You’re taking all my feelings and thoughts

Well, as an audience we certainly wish that to be the case. And I have yet to hear complaints about Grace not being into it; at least not when she is the headliner.

You know how to
Speak English properly
Then I like you, there you go

That one is a bit of a reach. We have to transpose the meaning. But she certainly likes it when communication with the crowd is possible. Be it emotionally through actions like dancing and singing along, be it verbally, at least to the extent that this is possible in the setting.

I look at you, and tell you that I’m feeling you out
Are you scared, or just getting bored of me now?

“This is a two way street. You are scrutinizing my performance. But so am I yours. Are you up to snuff?”

And everybody says there’s such things as second chances
But in life you just take what you get

This one is very applicable to her current situation in her career. The first chance has come and gone. AGT lies behind her; it was a nice springboard, she took it thankfully, but now she has to swim under her own power.

When I look at you it feels it will be forever
But who knows when we’ll meet again

The atmosphere in a concert can be really uplifting, but how far does it carry her? The next identity crisis is not far in the future, apparently ;) (For future readers: Grace wrote about an identity crisis and therefore wanting to dye her hair white just a few days after the end of the UrSB tour on her Instagram story. And by the time I type this, her hair IS white for all I know.)

I’ll make you laugh
I make you feel a special way

Oh yes, you do. She has that down pat.
EVERY.SINGLE.TIME

With only me, with only me
You’ll want to spend your every day

“I know that I’ll be in your playlists in the days to come.”

I give my all,
You love my energy

Literally. (Literally literally. Not teen-speek literally)

But no matter what, no matter what
You’ll just get bored of me

“But how far will the experience of this evening carry you, before you inevitably are fascinated by the next viral sensation?”

I’m mad
‘Cause you speak so easily to everyone
Please stop
Putting yourself down constantly
And just hear me for once

“I really like an attentive audience. Chatter is diverting my attention as much as yours. And can you please look up at the stage, instead of down at your phone screen? You know, I am singing my heart out up here. For you!“
(quoting from the latest interview with Q94 at Richmond: “Being the headliner it’s a little different. Kinda similar, though.”)

Stop listening to your mama when she gets in your head
Turn up your voice and just talk

“I like it when my audiences let it all hang out. Sing! Dance! Go crazy! You can be sensible again tomorrow morning!”

You listen to my words, but the moment I stop and say more
Then your eyes will be just unlocked

”You all can sing along to IDKMN beautifully. You can sing it all on your own, in fact.
But when I want to rest my voice a bit on my latest work, Stray, which is really dear to my heart, into which I have poured all my heart, I cannot rely on the crowd carrying the lyrics through.”

I’ll make you laugh
I make you feel a special way
With only me, with only me
You’ll want to spend your every day
I give my all,
You love my energy
But no matter what, no matter what
You’ll just get bored of me

I give my heart, I give my soul
I get attached and then they go

She certainly gives all that in her performances. And I don’t know how heartfelt these statements are, when she says towards the end of her Performance, “I really feel we have become friends now!
But I can imagine well that leaving the stage and letting the crowd go can leave a feeling of emptiness.

I play my part, I play the role
Maybe I should hide away so that they never know

”sometimes I consider leaving it behind, because it gets emotionally too draining.”

I’ll make you laugh
I make you feel a special way
With only me, with only me
You’ll want to spend your every day
I give my all,
You love my energy
But no matter what, no matter what
You’ll just get bored of me

“Please, show some loyalty. I need this to reinforce my decision to do this. Applause is my feed. So are the recurring streams!”

It does work. As is common in her work, more than one layer of meaning can be found.
And it’s so much fun to dig down and find these little gems.

(Please consider the snark I laid into Grace’s mouth here to be mine. All mine. She’d be way too nice to say this. (At least publicly. :p))

Thanks for following along!
