Hello everyone! Today is currently February 23, the day after the release of “Stray”. It is currently 8:21 in the morning and I have just woken up. The first thing that was playing in my head when I woke up today was “Stray”. It’s such a beautiful song with such amazing lyrics. I thought for a moment, and I decided it would be fun to write an article about the musical evolution of Grace VanderWaal. She has changed a lot over the past few years, so I thought this would be fun to write.

To begin, let’s go all the way back to the start of Grace’s career. Back in 2016, Grace won America’s Got Talent. She blew the judges away. She also blew all of America away. She got up on stage as this nervous, anxious little 12 year old girl and came off of it as a brave, confident young woman. AGT is what started it all for Grace, when she sang “I Don’t Know My Name.” That song is still one of my favorites because it was her first one. It holds a special place in my heart. That song is mellow and it’s just her and her ukulele, which I absolutely love. After she won AGT she released her EP, “Perfectly Imperfect” and left everyone shook. Songs like “Beautiful Thing” and “Gossip Girl”, which are two of my favorites, are on that EP. That whole EP was phenomenal. Songs like “Clay” were just piano while “Gossip Girl” included the ukulele and the drums. That EP was beautiful and I am still in love with it.

Next, Grace released “Moonlight” as a single I believe before releasing “Just the Beginning.” “Moonlight” showed a different sound than any of the songs from “Perfectly Imperfect”. She still had her uke, but something about that song made it different from the rest. I love that song so much! You could already see the evolution beginning to happen even then.

Next, she obviously released “Just the Beginning.” That whole album is amazing, and there was definitely a difference between it and “Perfectly Imperfect”. All of the songs on “Just the Beginning” are beautiful. Songs like “Just A Crush”, “Florets”, and “Escape My Mind” are included on that album. Some songs were upbeat, while some more mellow and sad. (Darkness Keeps Chasing Me) I like the combination and mix of songs on that album. Those tracks really are great. There’s a lot of ukulele included on that album as well.

Finally, we get to “Stray”. This song is definitely the most different from all of the others. There is no ukulele. It’s a guitar and drums. It’s got a somewhat jazzy feel to it. I love it and I think that this is going to be a totally different era for Grace.

This song has a great beat, though it’s actually quite a sad song because of it’s lyrics. Her sound and the way she writes has clearly developed a lot since 2016. The lyrics in this are so beautiful and amazing. They’re so deep and meaningful. You can see how much she has matured over the past few months even. I saw Grace live in July of last year. I was watching an interview of her a couple of months ago and her voice had already gotten a little deeper, I think she might have already gotten taller too. I thought, “Wow! She has changed so much in just a few months since I saw her in concert!”

I feel like Grace is going to have a great career and has a bright future ahead of her. I cannot wait to see what she does next. Whatever it is, I know it will be amazing!

Thanks for reading,
Canada
