The second half of the chronological list (September 2017 – present) of selected awards, honors and accolades that Grace has received so far in her short career.

Billboard Women in Music 2017
Category: Rising Star
December 30, 2017
Comparison: Camila Cabello, Selena Gomez
Format: Judged
Result: Won
Youngest winner in this category?: Yes
Of prime interest to: Music executives, entertainment media, A-list female musicians.
Importance: 5 out of 5

The Billboard Women in Music Awards, presented for the 12th time in 2017, was an elegant but relatively intimate affair, taking place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles. As the winners were all announced beforehand, the business of the evening consisted of introductions of the award recipients by celebrity presenters, stripped-down live performances by the honorees, and unhurried acceptance speeches giving tribute to the (slowly) improving state of the industry for women. Limiting the immediate exposure of the ceremony was its live presentation exclusively on Twitter TV, though the full broadcast is currently available for streaming on Billboard’s website. Grace’s introduction by AGT judge Heidi Klum, video highlight montage, powerful solo rendition of “Moonlight” and heartfelt emotional acceptance of the award made for the most riveting and impactful 10 minutes of Grace’s career to date. Her composure and maturity in front of some the biggest names in the music industry put everyone on notice, garnering raves from musicians, execs and entertainment media beginning with her dress rehearsal and continuing on for weeks after.

#TheYouTubeAd of 2017
Category: #TheYouTubeAd That Goes Straight To The Heart
Date: December 18, 2017
Competition: Hyundai, Volvo
Format: Popular Vote
Result: Won
Youngest winner in this category?: N/A
Of prime interest to: Advertising execs, emotional fans.
Importance: 2 out of 5

While technically not a win for Grace in the truest sense, the use of her iconic love song “Beautiful Thing” by ad agency Energy BBDO and media agency PHD for Windex in their “Story of Lucy” was a significant factor in the victory, based on YouTube comments and media coverage. While at its core just another popularity contest, with online voting allowing for significant influence from her base, the process is partly sponsored by the Webby Awards, a relatively high-profile if slightly controversial yearly judged industry award. It indicated to marketing decision-makers that Grace is a potential golden goose for advertisers who want to use her voice and words to their advantage (of which companies such as Honda and Google were already aware).

2018 Japan Gold Disc Awards
Category: New Artist of the Year (International)
Date: February 26, 2018
Competition: Alessia Cara, Shawn Mendes
Format: Sales
Result: Won
Youngest winner in this category?: Yes
Of prime interest to: Japanese music execs
Importance: 2 out of 5

Other than the determination of what constitutes a “New Artist”, this accolade is based solely on a straight sales and streaming tally by the Recording Industry Association of Japan, and shows the benefit of Grace’s two trips to that country in 2017. The importance of the metric as a gauge of her international appeal is tempered by the lack of a ceremony or trophy and the limit of significant coverage outside of Japan. Grace is not only the youngest ever in the International division, (created in 2012 to denote Western music competitors separate from the Asian and Japanese only awards) she is the youngest New Artist winner since the inception of the award.

2018 Radio Disney Music Awards
Category: Best Song That Makes You Smile
June 22, 2018
Competition: BTS, Meghan Trainor
Format: Popular Vote
Result: Nominated
Youngest nominee in this category? Yes
Of prime interest to: Youngest fans, entertainment media, music industry
Importance: 2 out of 5

Grace’s inability to attend the award ceremony was offset by the reason she was absent, being fully absorbed opening for Imagine Dragons on the 2018 summer leg of their Evolve tour. While Grace can find pride in being nominated for a specific song (“So Much More Than This”), rather than just another in the series of “new artist” honors, the Song That Makes You Smile category comes across as somewhat unfocused and less weighty than other contests. Grace can take solace in the notion the she was steamrollered in her category by BTS’s huge dedicated fanbase that also defeated some of the biggest names in music in other categories that year.

2018 MTV Video Music Awards
Category: Push Artist of the Year
Date: August 20, 2018
Competition: Hayley Kiyoko, SZA
Format: Popular Vote
Result: Nominated
Youngest nominee in this category? Yes
Of prime interest to: Young music fans
Importance: 2 out of 5

Grace’s nomination for an MTV VMA this early in her career without the benefit of a hit single and only a handful of official music videos was possible through the inaugural presentation of the Push Artist award. All of the first 15 artists and groups that were highlighted in the monthly US media blitz were eligible, and Grace’s appearance on several interview and performance shows was highlighted by her memorable filmed rendition of Leon Bridges’ “River” in the MTV studio. The category itself was not considered worthy of a trophy presentation or speech during the VMA ceremony, and winner Hayley Kiyoko was announced as the winner before her musical performance.

Fender Grace VanderWaal Ukulele Series
Category: Signature Series Artist
Date: October 2, 2018
Comparison: Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix
Format: Selection
Youngest for this honor? Yes
Of prime interest to: Serious musicians, budding ukulele players, merchandise collectors, marketing industry
Importance: 3 out of 5

In late 2018, Fender made good on a year-long promise to release a personalized set of ukuleles with Grace’s name and stylings as part of their ongoing Signature series of instruments. While the honor is in good part a strategic marketing decision, the level of regard with which Fender instruments are held in the industry and the caliber of the artists who are given the honor make it worth inclusion on this list. Outstanding sales figures and reports attest to the effectiveness of the choice, and merchandising and advertising agents should take note. As the first ukulele Signature artist, Fender might have attempted to work instead with Jake Shimabukuro, James King, or Tyler Joseph of Twenty-One Pilots. Regardless, Grace literally stands now as the first name in Fender ukuleles.

2018 MTV European Music Awards
Category: Best Push
Date November 5, 2018
Competition: Bishop Briggs, Superorganism
Format: Popular Vote
Result: Won
Youngest winner in this category? Yes
Of prime interest to: Grace fans world-wide, European entertainment media, European bookers
Importance: 3 out of 5

In contrast to the American version of this award, the EMA Best Push award has been given out as a continuous award for 10 years, denoting the best breakthrough artist of the year. Nominees now come from the same pool of candidates as the VMA awards, but due to a difference in eligibility periods, Grace was not up against music standouts SZA, Khalid or Noah Cyrus. Voting was unlimited and worldwide, resulting in a button-mashing exercise for the various fanbases. The win does signify Grace’s viability as a draw if and when she tours in Europe and elsewhere.

Forbes 30 Under 30 2019
Category: Music
Date, November 13, 2018
Comparison: Camila Cabello, Post Malone
Format: Judged
Result: Listed, winners placed alphabetically
Youngest winner in this category? Yes
Of prime interest to: Music industry, entertainment media
Importance: 4 out of 5

The selection of Grace to the 2019 edition of the Forbes 30 under 30 Music list comes at a significant time in her life and career. Judged and compiled by a panel of music luminaries who were all previously on the list themselves, it is comprised of musicians, writers, managers and executives at every level of the industry, and her inclusion does not seem out of place. While Grace’s bio on the Forbes web page cites a selection of her accomplishments that validate her as a legitimate established artist, she is still the youngest ever to receive the considerable accolade. Honorees are only eligible to make the list once, so Grace has made her mark less than halfway through her eligibility period. She was also chosen for the 30 for 30 list in the Celebrity category.
