I know this seems like a cop-out because it’s easily Grace’s shortest song, but I also find it to be one of her most beautiful. I was so disappointed it didn’t make the album. I would love to hear a properly recorded version.

To my knowledge Grace only performed it publicly once. It happened during the launch party for her Moonlight music video on the rooftop of Sony (Columbia’s parent company) Headquarters in midtown Manhattan in July of 2017. It’s the same rooftop where nearly a year later she would do a live stream with MTV and perform Clearly, City Song, and the first properly recorded live version of Darkness Keeps Chasing Me. That’s one magical rooftop and it seems to bring out the best in her.

The weather wasn’t pleasant that day (definitely low) as it was raining and gusty, though Grace brilliantly ad-libbed apologies and encouragement throughout the song that only added to the charm of the performance. I’ve included those ad-libs in parenthesis below as it’s integral to the only experience of this song publicly available (thanks FanderWaal News!). That I could still be so deeply absorbed by the song despite the distractions of wind noise, cans tumbling across the roof launched by the sudden gusts, and Grace casually, and eloquently, chatting with the crowd during the performance says a lot about Grace as a performer: she is captivating.

(My first song is perfect for this rainy weather. It’s called “Unfixable Minds” and I really hope you enjoy it)

(We should have handed out ponchos; I just realized. Sadly, we did not plan for this.)

Unfixable minds
that’s how I explain you and I
Lost in the dark
(honestly the rain feels kinda good)
just gotta find where you are

Unfixable minds
are the only ones who can fix
unfixable hearts
just like mine

Oh
Whoooooa
oh, no no no no no No

Unfixable minds
are the only ones who can fix
unfixable hearts
just like mine

(Thanks, guys. I love you too, you know. You’re the type of people to stand [in the rain]… ‘cause I know you’re probably not enjoying it like I am. I like that attitude.)

Like Lungs, this is Grace at her most abstract. She’s painting mind-pictures again, taking us on a barely tethered journey of emotions. Much of Grace’s songs use very arresting imagery in order to place the listener within her songs. “Unfixable Minds” doesn’t do that. It all takes place in your mind and heart, your feelings, and appropriately, nothing is literal in this song, it’s all subjective and personal.

First lines…

“Unfixable minds
that’s how I explain you and I“

I take this to mean what it says: We must be crazy to be together… there’s no other explanation.

“Lost in the dark
just gotta find where you are”

Again, Grace isn’t giving us a visual to anchor ourselves, in fact she’s taking away our ability to find purchase to the point where we lose ourselves in the song, right alongside Grace as she relates the lyrics.

“Unfixable minds
are the only ones who can fix
unfixable hearts
just like mine”

Here’s Grace-the-sage making an appearance once again. I fully believe she is exercising more than a fair bit of sophisticated wordplay. Check this out.

What if Grace doesn’t mean “unfixable” in the obvious way: “beyond repair”.

What if Grace means “unfixable” as in, “perpetually in motion; never at rest”?

This would provide a deeper meaning to the conclusion she draws that…

“Unfixable minds
are the only ones who can fix
unfixable hearts
just like mine”

I believe she’s using fix in both senses of the word. When she’s saying “can fix” she’s referring to repair, but in reference to hearts and minds she’s saying that only a mind not fixed into a particular set of opinions, attitudes and beliefs, but rather one that is pliable, will be able to cope and keep up with a heart that is similarly never at rest; one that is passionate, fickle, and easily bored.

If you want to love her, be prepared for a roller coaster of emotion, learn to adapt, or you may be left behind.

Then again, I’ve been accused of over-analyzing Grace’s lyrics.

Eye of the beholder being what it is, I believe the above to be true. What say you?
